The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the annual bacteria sampling of drinking water from wells, hauled water storage tanks, cisterns, ponds, or springs. There can also be other contaminants in the private water system (PWS) which may pose a health threat. Some commonly requested tests for drinking water include:

  • Bacteria: Total coliform bacteria and E. coli
  • Nitrate/Nitrite
  • Lead
  • Copper

SCPH Water Testing To have your water tested by an SCPH inspector, please complete the Request Form and submit to SCPH with payment. Once the request has been received, an inspector will contact you to schedule an appointment.

High Bacteria Sample Results If your sample results show a high bacteria level, it is recommended that the PWS is chlorinated and then re-sampled. It is recommended that a contractor chlorinate the well, however the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has homeowner disinfection instructions on their website.
