Community Education & Training Initiatives

Knowledge is the best preventative medicine. Our Senior and Adult Services experts are available to provide free, customized presentations for your community group, faith-based organization, medical office, or business.

We cover a wide range of essential topics designed to empower caregivers, community members, and medical professionals. Our core presentation offerings include:

Dementia & Brain Health Related Trainings

  • Dementia Friends: These interactive, 90-minute workshops help community members turn their understanding of dementia into practical, supportive action. Participants learn five key messages, including the fact that dementia is not a normal part of aging and that there is always more to a person than their diagnosis.
    • Specialized Focuses: We offer Dementia Friends workshops tailored to supporting individuals living alone, as well as those living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The training includes communication tips and "The Bookcase Story," a helpful analogy for understanding how memory loss impacts the brain.
  • Behavioral Interventions: When Caring for Someone with Dementia: This 90-minute training provides applied, practical strategies for anyone interacting with individuals living with dementia. It is designed for family caregivers, community professionals, students, and the general public. The session incorporates the most current research about dementia care and effective practical strategies. Participants will review: understanding dementia, identifying causes, practical interventions, and real-world application.
  • Talking About Brain Health and Aging: This 60-minute workshop focuses on the basics of healthy aging, teaching participants how to maintain good brain health through lifestyle choices while identifying and reducing potential risks like falls or medication interactions.

Caregiver Support Strategies

  • Empowered Caregiver: Offered in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association, this free educational series helps caregivers effectively respond to dementia-related behaviors. Participants learn how to identify physical, emotional, and environmental triggers and utilize non-medical strategies to safely redirect and distract their loved ones.
  • Behaviors & Alzheimer's Disease - Using IDEA!: This workshop equips family caregivers with a simple, three-step approach to managing challenging behaviors: IDentify the behavior, Explore the cause, and Adjust the response. Caregivers learn that all behavior has meaning and gain practical skills to respond with comfort and patience rather than arguing.

Clinical & Professional Tools

  • The KAER Framework: Designed by the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), this toolkit helps primary care teams and health professionals support brain health and early cognitive impairment detection.
    • The Four Steps: We train professionals on Kickstarting the brain health conversation, Assessing for cognitive impairment, Evaluating for dementia, and Referring patients to community resources. We offer specific guidance on applying the KAER framework to adults living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD).
