Water Sampling

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that private water systems such as wells, hauled water storage tanks, cisterns, ponds, or springs are sampled annually for bateria. SCPH offers bacteria sampling for both total coliform and E.coli. Additionally, SCPH offers sampling for other parameters known to pose an immediate health risk including:

  • Nitrate/Nitrite
  • Lead
  • Copper
  • Arsenic

SCPH does not offer water quality sampling services for aesthetic metrics such as but not limited to: dissolved total solids, water hardness, Iron bacteria, Sulfur (rotten egg odor), salinity, etc. Homeowners seeking these types of tests need to contact a water treatment company.

SCPH Water Testing:  To have your water sampled by an SCPH inspector for testing, please complete the Request Form and submit the form to SCPH with payment. Once the request has been received, an inspector will contact you to schedule an appointment.

High Bacteria Sample Results:  If the sample results have a high bacteria level, it is recommended that the PWS be chlorinated and then re-sampled. SCPH recommends that a PWS contractor chlorinate the well, however the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has homeowner disinfection instructions on their website.
