Birth spacing refers to the amount of time between one pregnancy and the next. Health experts recommend waiting at least 18 months after giving birth before becoming pregnant again to support the health and well-being of both parent and baby.

Allowing time between pregnancies gives the body an opportunity to recover physically, replenish important nutrients, and prepare for a future pregnancy. Research shows that pregnancies that occur too close together may increase the risk of complications, including premature birth and low birth weight.

Why Birth Spacing Matters

In Summit County, complications related to premature birth are a leading cause of infant mortality and accounted for approximately 35% of infant deaths between 2017 and 2021. Black families are disproportionately affected, with preterm birth rates approximately 1.5 times higher than those of White families. Birth spacing is one of several strategies that may help improve birth outcomes and support healthier pregnancies.
